Haas met Hahn on-shoot in Rio de Janeiro, engulfed in the bursting creativity that was the lifeblood of the favelas. This sparked an idea, which led them back to the same neighbourhoods in 2005. It was there that they created their first, impossible-to-ignore, 150m2 mural, ‘Boy with kite’ with the local youth.
The mural provided the locals with training, jobs and income, and instilled them with a sense of ownership, community and pride. Seen far and wide, it is a testament of the potential that lies at the heart of the favelas, which helped to kick-start a chain of transformational projects in neighborhoods from Rio de Janeiro to Philadelphia.
